Happiness Blooms From Within

by | Nov 30, 2015 | happiness & meaning

What does it mean to be happy? Where do you find happiness? How do you get happiness? These are some of the questions I’ve been pondering on this past year.

I went through a bit of a depression over the summer and I felt like the happiness I once had inside of me was gone and was sucked out by the various strains in my life. I felt like I had stopped living and instead simply existed in everyday life. It was a dark time, believe me, but being an eternal optimist, I didn’t stay in that state for too long.

There was something I learned and tried to remind myself everyday: true happiness blooms from within. I learned that in order to be truly happy with your life, you need create that happiness within yourself, but it’s not something that can be done overnight. Learning to accept and realize that happiness comes from within is something you need to exercise and train yourself to do. It’s a skill that I’ve been working on for the past couple of months, and it’s been changing my life tremendously.

When depression or sadness hits, it’s easy to stay lost in the clouds or in the dark, but if you want to be happy, you need to look for that silver lining. You can’t rely on outside factors or other people to make you happy. Sure, your friends and family and other people in your life can make you happy, but they can’t be your sole source of happiness. Relying on something you can lose to make you happy is like choosing to lose that happiness. You need to be able to create your happiness from within because at the end of the day, you are the only thing in your life that’s permanent.

The happiness you find doesn’t have to be something tremendous or extravagant. It’s not always a state of being constantly joyful, or smiling, or enthusiastic, or cheerful. Happiness can be as simple as being content or being calm. It’s having an overall positive disposition and not letting the negativity take power over your life or how you feel.

One of my favorite quotes by Eric T. Moore says, “For every negative that consumes your happiness, affirm two positives that sustain you.” In order to maintain the happiness in your life, you need to open your eyes and see it for yourself – and it’s a decision that you have to make. If you want to be happy, you have to choose to be happy, and once you choose to be happy and to foster that joy from within, the happiness from within will continue to grow and bloom.

The Day I Fell In Love With Life

The day that I fell in love with life isn’t clear to me. There was no moment of revelation. It was more like I stumbled into it.
